Honey buds
A few weeks ago, bumpy little buds were just starting to sprout on this Shademaster honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos inermis ‘Shademester’).

Spindly sentinels
These thin spring gingko leaves are posted at intervals along their branches like wispy barbed wired, standing alert for insect intruders and bird interlopers. Gingko biloba ‘Princeton Sentry’ (Princeton Sentry maidenhair tree).

Caterpillar cloud
Just beginning to squirm out of their cottony confines, these caterpillars will no doubt enjoy snacking on the freshly hatched leaves of their hapless host tree.

Jellyfish epaulets
Dangling down and drifting through the branch currents, this swarm of oak-tassel jellies festoon the tree like so many fringy epaulets. (No markers in this park, but it may be a red oak.)

Pink Flowering Sunshine
Thought I would post a pretty pink picture to brighten what has been a dismal grey day, at least in New Jersey. Love the name, too: Rosy Cloud Cherry (prunus subhirtella). Sounds like a good song title for Takako Minekawa.

Oh Miss Crabtree…
This tree looks both bare and decked out with ornamentation at the same time, which is a neat trick. According to the placard by it, it’s a Sargent crabapple (malus sargentii).
