Sun stained glass

Sunday afternoon sun peeked through the colorful leaves of another flowering cherry, outlining the delicate capillaries of each and turning the branch into its own quiet chapel of light.

Caterpillar cloud

Just beginning to squirm out of their cottony confines, these caterpillars will no doubt enjoy snacking on the freshly hatched leaves of their hapless host tree.

Jellyfish epaulets

Dangling down and drifting through the branch currents, this swarm of oak-tassel jellies festoon the tree like so many fringy epaulets. (No markers in this park, but it may be a red oak.)

A peppery white formal

These pillowy white pear blossoms look like they’re ready to float out to a formal occasion. Inside, each is peppered with saucy little polka-dotty anthers. (Capital pear or Pyrus calleryana ‘Capital’, according to its park marker.)

Skewers, soft & sweet

About a week after the Amanogawa cherry blossoms hung in clusters like spring fruit, they filled out into branches of frilly flower kebabs stabbing at the sky. Bees flew in to enjoy the sweet feast.
