Knapweed time

On this sleepy, overcast Fourth, the luminescent lilac petal rays shoot off this knapweed bloom — possibly Meadow knapweed (Centaurea √ó moncktonii) — like daytime fireworks.

Blue in the place

A pleasing stretch of violets is blooming in one of the open lawns of Thompson Park. They may be Common blue violets (Viola sororia), appropriately the state flower of New Jersey.

True to its name, this tiny Field sparrow (Spizella pusilla) was hopping about the greenery, leaves, and assorted brushy bits of an open field.

“I never thought it was such a bad little tree.”

This petite tree — about a two-foot tall pine (genus Pinus) — was along the outer edge of the meadow area of Weltz Park. Even without the tree lot search lights, it suggested a Charlie Brown finding.
