Trick kite treats

Like two koi kites dangling from a pole or long paper lanterns lit from within, these copper-colored leaves floated in the sunshine at the end of an otherwise bare stem.

Ice aged

Encased in ice, layers of leaves and other woodland debris were also frozen in time like a scratched and faded silver print.

Beech blonde

I think these crisp, paper-white leaves may be of an American beech tree (Fagus grandifolia). Leftover from last year, they’ll probably hang on until overtaken by new growth.

Sun stained glass

Sunday afternoon sun peeked through the colorful leaves of another flowering cherry, outlining the delicate capillaries of each and turning the branch into its own quiet chapel of light.

Caterpillar cloud

Just beginning to squirm out of their cottony confines, these caterpillars will no doubt enjoy snacking on the freshly hatched leaves of their hapless host tree.
