Floe chart

Sparkling bits of ice in and alongside a narrow creek in the woods make the swirling water look slow and syrupy. It should regain some vitality over the next few days, though, as the area warms to above freezing.

The Red and the Black Bird

A few days before the latest snow hit, this male Northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) was munching on the sparse berry remnants of a thicket near the marsh.

Pale green fleece

I think this small patch of velvety greens is Woolly hedgenettle or Lamb’s ear (Stachys byzantina). It was growing along a path out near the end of Sandy Hook.

Wrenpoint location

This Carolina wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus) was quite cautious as it hunted around for food, stopping often to look up for potential threats. Or maybe it was just keeping an eye out for friends.
