A tiny dot on a mission, this Red velvet mite (genus Trombidium, I think) was making good headway across what must have seemed like an immense asphalt desert.

Prick or treat

An invasive Asian import, Wine raspberry or Japanese wineberry plants (Rubus phoenicolasius) rim the path that loops by an old wooden tower. They offer abundant, if prickly, summer fruit.
