Fewer than fifty shades of black(berry)

In a few bramble patches around the lake, blackberries were in varying degrees of ripeness — from red-flag tart, through wine-tinged temptation, to an inky invitation to sweetness. These are probably Common or Allegheny blackberries (Rubus allegheniensis).

Ah, baccharis!

Along one section of dunes on Sandy Hook, several Eastern baccharis bushes (Baccharis halimifolia) were covered with fluffy, white-plumed fruits with purple bases. Like tiny paint brushes or clothes whisks, these whispy elements gave the shrubs an overall feathery look.

Sweet-gum mesclun

The ground under a couple of trees was strewn with a jumble of the prickly dried fruits and bright green, grape-bunch flowers of an American sweet gum, with cherry petals thrown in for an eye-appealing mixed tree salad.

Fruitake

Unconcerned by nearby strollers, this Northern mockingbird flew into a bush right along a paved path that circles Franklin Lake. After conducting a cursory survey of the available berries, he approved and sampled same.

The afternoon sun lit up the fuzzy fibers along the stem and branches of this scraggly little tree or shrub, bringing it and its scattered red berries to life.

Figure of preach

Looking a bit like a mutant bell pepper, this Matango-esque seed head is just the topper for the exuberant woodland stick figure formed by a Jack-in-the-pulpit. (Earlier post about the leafier stage of this kind of plant.)
