A Weed Called Horsefly

A few outcroppings of Horseflyweed or Wild indigo (Baptisia tinctoria) added a welcoming sprig of sunny color to a parched patch of meadow between two wooded trails at Charleston Springs.

Bee all live in a yellow sulpherine

Whether or not it actually lives there, a tiny bee was enjoying the tasty offerings of this pretty pale yellow Sulphur cinquefoil flower (Potentilla recta).

The old flower trick

Performing their end of summer magic, Goldenrod flowers (perhaps Gray goldenrod, Solidago nemoralis) are transforming bright yellow petals into fluffy white flyaways.

A bud named Sue

The dark chocolate centers of these Black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta) looked sweet enough to attract at least one summer customer at Assunpink Wildlife Management Area.
