Sweet-gum mesclun

The ground under a couple of trees was strewn with a jumble of the prickly dried fruits and bright green, grape-bunch flowers of an American sweet gum, with cherry petals thrown in for an eye-appealing mixed tree salad.

Frostbitten sky

Smudged by cloud cover, bleached by snow glare, and framed with sweetgum silhouettes, the sun hung white, low, and frosty in the late afternoon.

Stickball figure

Looking like a verdant medieval flail for squirrel-sized knights, this spiky seed pod from a Sweetgum tree (Liquidambar styraciflua) was lying just down the path & across the creek from the persimmon.
