A peppery white formal

These¬†pillowy white pear¬†blossoms look like they’re ready to float out to a formal occasion. Inside, each is peppered with saucy little polka-dotty anthers. (Capital pear or Pyrus calleryana ‘Capital’, according to its park marker.)

The lipstick has landed

Five days later, almost all of the lipstick buds are open. Slender fingers with nail-polished tips gather to form a wayward sea urchin within.

The fuzzy underside of nature

Stem-side view of an emerging star magnolia blossom, in all its fuzzy glory. Its Latin name sounds like an Italian film star from the 50s: Magnolia Stellata.
