Another fuzzy budder, this Leonard Messel magnolia (Magnolia x loebneri ‘Leonard Messel’) had a few early openers that were far enough along to show some the pink-purple petals swaddled within.

Magic carpet ride

Float off on the lofty blush blossoms of this Indian Magic crabapple (Malus ‘Indian Magic’). Semi-desiccated fruit will be served after takeoff.

A peppery white formal

These pillowy white pear blossoms look like they’re ready to float out to a formal occasion. Inside, each is peppered with saucy little polka-dotty anthers. (Capital pear or Pyrus calleryana ‘Capital’, according to its park marker.)

Yellow cup of sunshine

Another variety of magnolia in the park, Elizabeth Magnolia, offers up a papery pale yellow cup to drink in some late afternoon sun. Meanwhile, some of the neighboring blooms are just beginning to break out of their fuzz-dusty pink bud shells.

Yellow Star Clusters

Looking at a common shrub like forsythia, as if for the first time, its bright yellow petals evoke a young galaxy of stars, still clustered close but spreading out in all directions.
