King of the bill

Flaunting some of the biggest bills on the lake, Northern shovelers (Anas clypeata) make a stately sight as they glide through the water.

Watchduck on duty

With much of the swampy area iced over, these mallards sheltered in a nearby creek. As the others tucked their heads in to rest, one female stayed alert, presumably keeping an eye out for trouble.

Bird’s nest troupe

A few days ago, the barn swallow chicks were still in the nest. Looking more like their parents at this point, at least four were jammed into their ever shrinking hideaway. Today, though, nobody was home.

Hi-ho! Vireo

With amazingly clear peepers, this White-eyed vireo (Vireo griseus) seemed ever attentive to the goings-on in the surrounding shrubs, trees, and vines.

Paddling processional

With their orange-tinged heads held high, these three cormorants were moving in elegant harmony around the lower pond at Holmdel Park. If they’re Double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus), they may be resting over on their way back north for the summer.
