Several Chipping sparrows (Spizella passerina) were darting about the wooded edge of the park field near the library — attractive little birds decked out with rusty-brown toupees and dark eyeliner.

Two of them (probably males) got into a momentary scrape but soon settled their differences and perched quietly for a while.

  1. They’re so cute when they’re annoyed. Their caps stand up like little mohawks, and for tiny little guys, they sure do project a heavy air of irritation.
