Winter wasp wail

Coming upon this nest lead to a double-take: What were wasps doing out at this time of year?

But it seems these hive members stopped crawling some time ago, even though their dusty shells still cling to the paper home as if frozen in the middle of their daily activity.

The overall nest suggests a head in mid-scream, its open mouth emitting insects rather than sound waves.

They may have been Bald-faced hornets (really wasps).

(Earlier post about another hornet nest.)
