I know why the caged bird sits

Dodge brambler (or bramble dodger)

Dodge brambler
(or bramble dodger)

Sitting within such a twisty, tangly thicket, this small bird — I think a female Dark-eyed junco (Junco hyemalis) — looked like a woodland prisoner.

The natural cage didn’t hold her, though, and she flew in and out with ease.

(Poem referenced by title: ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’ by Maya Angelou.)
