Lipstick rocketship

Bloom ready for blast off!

Ready for bloom blast off!
(Photo taken April 14, 2013)

This capped bud reminded me of both a lipstick and a rocket. It has since taken off leaving behind a billowing plume of petals.

I think it’s some variety of magnolia. I’m leaning toward lily (Magnolia liliiflora), but it could be a saucer (Magnolia x soulangiana).
